DCMS Episode 600: The Big Bracket

Finally, after all the hubbub and chatter and stops and starts, Mikey, d$ and #XLessDr Earl have made it to the culmination of topics of 28 previous episodes... The Big Bracket.

From Episode 291 to Episode 599, 36 movie roles were chosen and now will face off one on one... a majority vote rules, as the crew goes through the match ups one at at time.

But what fun is a Movie Role Bracket if there aren't more Friends of the Show joining up?  And Friends of the Show join up... producing the show is Roth from Wyoming and stepping in is Lil G "Pride of Albany" Ryfun... then along the way comes (in order of appearance...) Lil Andy... Aussie Nate... Hurricane Rhett... "Amish" Jenn Novotny... Jenny Kaufman... Matty Mink... Uncle Brian... Coach DiBello... and of course, The Icon, Scotty "Ryfulicious" Ryfun...

It's absolutely the longest episode we've ever done, as we agreed early on there would be no Big Bracket in 601 -- the group powers through the entire show. New theme songs, familiar favorites, jokes fly, Garrison drives, Mikey has a delay, Earl changes his mind, d$ keeps it all moving.

Enjoy the show.

Episode 599: The Final 9 Roles

It took over 12 years to get here, but here we are.  Dave, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl are at the penultimate episode of an episode that feels bigger than 500.  A hundred eps bigger, as a matter of fact...

This is Episode 599.

As the Big Bracket finally takes shape, there are 27 movie roles that will vie for the title of "Most Iconic Movie Role of All Time" -- from Indiana Jones to Sally Albright to Derek Zoolander to James Bond and more... but we don't need 27. We need 36.

And to fill the final 9 roles, we've asked a podcasting legend, the one, the only Geek Out Loud's Steve Glosson to join the show and discuss.

With over 40 iconic movie roles in play, most will be eliminated outright, as round by round, more and more famous legendary names are dispensed, tossed aside like Mikey tosses aside Star Wars now...

Ethan Hunt gets a final shot... Harry Potter hopes to work some magic... Lord of the Rings has several nominees... Keanu Reeves has two up for debate... familiar names, previous losers like Carl Spackler, Freddy Krueger, and Kermit the Frog try once more.

And at the end of the episode, only 9 remain. The Final 9.

Episode 594: The Mike v Dave Tourney

With episode 600 looming, the Big Bracket is getting full... and Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl welcome back Friend of the Show Clay Shaver, and he brings a special tournament for the crew to push through.

This time around, to determine which role will join the greats like Prince Akeem, Castor Troy, Indiana Jones, Anna Scott, and not Ethan Hunt, this time, there are 16 "DAVE" or "DAVIDs" from the movies, and 16 "MIKE", "MIKEY", or "MICHAELs to vote on.

Plus, the guys catch up with the latest with Clay in the Mitt of Michigan, his thoughts on the "Barbie" phenomenon, and lots of  talk about Robert Romanus.  Lots of talk.  And even some Boner Stabone.

You just gotta listen.

And then, Dave pays off the 1st annual Dave'Stalgia, with older films assigned by friends of the show like Burgeydoodle, Roth from Wyoming, Lil G, from hosts Mikey and #TwitterlessDrEarl and a last minute addition from Clay himself.

The Big Bracket awaits in September, as we will finally end a years long search for the greatest movie role ever... but there are several spots empty, and to fill up one of those blank spaces, #FanboySummer2023 loser winner participant Matt Mink makes his glorious Coke-filled return to the podcast!

This time around, Mikey, d$, and #TwitterlessDrEarl catch up with Matt and his latest on both of his podcasts -- The Soundtrack of Life and Man-Child Movie Night -- before Matt leads the show into the 27th Big Bracket tourney... this time, to find the greatest movie role from the BMF himself, Samuel L. Jackson.

From Matt's least favorite Tarantino film to the version of "H8ful Eight" that everyone should see to #TwitterlessDrEarl putting "The 51st State" on his to-be-watched list to Dave pimping for Carl Lee Hailey to Mikey trying to explain the Shaft mythology... 32 roles go in, only one can be a Bad M-F'er and advance.

Episode 583: The Movie Role Duo Mega Tourney

As the Big Bracket draws near, with Episode 600 a mere 17 episodes and a summer season away, it's time to crank up the entries... and what better way to bring in a plethora, a cornucopia, a tundra if you will of iconic roles, than to have a Mega Tourney with over 60 famous and beloved characters from cinema and film and movie flicker shows...

But to do something so big, we have to have a big roster of Friends of the Show... Spawn of Ryfun, Lil G, Garrison.... the father of the Spawn of Ryfun, that being Scotty RyRy... and the pride of The Beaches of Cheyenne, Roth from Wyoming.

Together with d$, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl, they dive in to figure out the battles between View Askew and Aurora, Illinois... between dimwits and stoners... between classic duos both odd and slapsticky...

And Garrison makes a surprise turn in his quest to see Ethan Hunt win the whole tourney. A betrayal if you will.

And who knew these guys loved Twilight so much?

Featured in the tournament:
Harry & Lloyd
Ricky Bobby & Cal

Episode 577: Les Deucerables... The Western vs The Musical

Big plans ahead for the summer at The Deucecast Movie Show, so in an effort to continue the quest to find the greatest roles of all time... it's another Big Bracket Tourney.

This time, friend of the show Roth from Wyoming stops by with his own bracket, featuring two of his fave movie genres... on one side, the classic and modern westerns of the age, featuring the classic and modern roles in the tournament... Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Will Kane, Bill Mumy, The Man with No Name, Doc Holliday, all of the Wyatt Earps (the good one and the Costner one) and more.

On the other side, the classic and modern musical roles of the age -- Maria Von Trapp, Lil Orphan Annie (in a heated battle, by the way), Dorothy, Willy Wonka and more, many of which lead to a true "what makes a musical?" discussion.

And Mary Poppins gets her final shot at Big Bracket glory.

Episode 573: The Supporting Actor Tourney

What better way to follow up one heck of a Oscar role tournament than to do one more, this time with Supporting Actors and Supporting Actresses... and as you'll find out, with not quite enough to fill the bracket, a little creativity was used...

Either way, where else can you get the likes of Maria Von Trapp going up against The Graduate's Mrs Robinson or Rita Moreno taking on Marisa Tomei in an epic legendary role battle.  Only at the Deucecast Movie Show, that's right.

And to do take on such a task, Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl have to bring in a little help - that comes in the shape of Roth from Wyoming, host of the Good Day 4 a Movie Podcast... and then another little surprise joins in to break the ties and give a Commodus style thumbs up or thumbs down.

Episode 572: The Oscar Winners Tourney

In the midst of the Oscar season, the SAG Awards, the PGA Awards, the BAFTAs, the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, and of course, The Deucies, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that we are still filling the Big Bracket with names and memorable, ICONIC, movie roles -- so what better way to merge  the award season into the Big Bracket with an Oscar Winner Tourney.

And to help decide this all important winner -- Lil G, the Spawn of Scotty Ryfun, joins Mike and d$ while #TwitterlessDrEarl is on assignment in Nova Scotia.

Sixteen Oscar winning actresses -- only roles that won the golden statue, not just nominated, because if you're not first, you're last -- on one side, and 16 Oscar winning actors on the other.

Tonight's ep involves some incredible actresses -- Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain hope that being recent winners will cement their own legacy in the voters eyes, while Hollywood royalty like Vivian Leigh and Audrey Hepburn hope that multiple generations of stardom will put them through.  Gregory Peck's Atticus Finch strides through the courtroom of Bracket Opinion, while Daniel Plainview drinks your Big Bracket Milkshake.

Some actresses appear twice, some movies get multiple shots at glory, and for some roles, this might be their only chance to move forward.

And who knew that Mikey hated Gladiator so doggone much?

Episode 552: The Franchise Role Tournament

Because we are on the downslope to Episode 600, and we've done 21 of these and need to do at least 11 more... its TOURNEY TIME.

Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl are ready to put another movie role into the Big Bracket, to figure out what the greatest movie role of all time could be.  This episode, it's picking out the greatest roles from franchises.

The rules.... must be a character who appears in at least FOUR theatrical releases, no matter how brief, and can be played by the same or different actors.  Star Wars and Marvel are intentionally excluded, with one brief exception. And for the first time in any DCMS Tourney... Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings make their appearances.

To do such a big event, the Deucecast trio need help -- enter the Pride of Buford Georgia, Spawn of Ryfun himself, Lil G, and Friend of the Show Roth from Wyoming, picking up last minute invites to be a part of the madness.

Transformers go tet a tet... the wizarding world has a rumble, as does Middle Earth... action stars attempt to keep it in the family, while dynamic duos take on crime stopping wiseacres... will G's push for Ethan Hunt finally be successful?  What happens when two of Mikey's icons face off?  Is it fair to make #TwitterlessDrEarl decide a match from movies he's never seen?  Probably not, but here we go!

Episode 532: The Baseball Movie Role Tourney

BATTER UP!  Baseball has begun, 30 games into the season, Dave's team, Baltimore, is already out of it, Mikey doesn't care because Dallas Cowboys play the foosball and not the baseball, and #TwitterlessDrEarl is out and about, saving lives, delivering babies and politicking.

So, we bring in Roth from Wyoming, co-host of Good Day for a Movie Podcast, and Deucecast Discorder Extraordinaire, to help figure out which one of these 32 incredible baseball roles head to the Big Bracket of Ep 600!

First up, the return of WORD UP! to the show -- discussions on Doctor Strange, on Netflix failings, and Top Gun Maverick prospects. Plus, some other random chitter chatter before the  tourney takes over.

Roth, Mikey, and d$ set out to determine the best modern day baseball role in movie history, with everything from Wild Thing to a double dose of Costner to Tony Danza and Tom Selleck and Bernie Mac and a few chicks even make the final line up. Great discussion, great film memories.

Episode 497: The Tourney of American Treasures

The big 5-0-0 approaches, but there are still movie discussions to be had before then! On the 497th excursion into podcast mediocrity, Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl chat a bit, then get to Birthday Movies -- Sully is 5 years old! Wicker Park is 15 years old! And somehow the math is off, and The Shawshank Redemption is... 27 years old?

Then, we find the next movie role to make the Big Bracket... and it's a intertwined battle of two American treasures, one being K Costner and the other being M Keaton.

From Birdman to Johnny Dangerously to Eliot Ness to Roy McAvoy, some of our favorite movies and movie characters do battle, plus a great conversation on the legacy of Keaton's Batman, and Peak Whitney.

Episode 494: The Summer Movie Tournament

The summer is winding down, the Deucecast Movie Show is headed toward 500, and another ReFlicktions is right around the corner... but first, the cherry atop the summer series.

And what better way to cap off the award winning, acclaimed, BET Source Award nominated Summer Movie Series than to pick out some of the biggest roles and make it a full on, official Big Bracket Movie Role Tournament... with the winner joining Castor Troy, Jerry Maguire, Indiana Jones, and more in the Big Bracket coming... later. Much later.

Thirty two roles, matched up one by one, until there is only one.

And what better way to make this happen than to bring on The Spawn of Ryfun, the one and only Son of the Pride of Bainswick, Georgia, Lil G Ryfun!

McLovin gets tons of McLove... which Goldblum is better... how much does Mikey love My Big Fat Greek Wedding... can Pee Wee move on... who's the real Patriot... will Connor4Real never stop? or Never stop never stopping?... and the first real life person in the movie role tourney!

And a vicious battle between a high school Emma and a ghost seer...

Plus... we have ourselves a tiebreaker... a special guest who comes roaring in like a wrecking ball.

Episode 467: The Frat Pack Tournament

It's been a while since the Deucecast eyes were cast upon filling the Big Bracket, but Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl is here to bring it back.

The Frat Pack is the legendary group of actors from the early 2000s that gave us incredible classics like Old School, Wedding Crashers, Zoolander, Dodgeball, and many more, starring names like Vince, Owen, Ben, Luke, Ferrell, Jack, Rudd, Carrell... and it's time to take four of them and match them up, knock them down, and crown a single champion -- a champion that moves onto the Big Bracket of All Time Great Movie Roles.

Vince Vaughn (Peter, Raj, Jeremy, Bradley) takes on Ben Stiller (Derek, Mr Furious, Larry, White) takes on Owen Wilson (McQueen, John, John, Burnett) takes on Luke Wilson (he was in stuff), all mixed up -- 44 roles, only one will survive.

First up, the guys play a new (to them) game of Doug Benson's IMDb (because he is D.B.), and then they take on the best roles of the legendary Bill Murray. From Ghosbusters to Groundhog Day to Mad Dog & Glory to all the Wes Anderson films.

Match up by match up, one by one, until there is a single Best Bill Murray Role of All Time, headed to the Big Bracket.

Plus... the real time struggle of putting together a show at the last minute as Dave doubles back and somehow makes the tournament work...
