Episode 616: The 2024 Movie Auction

It's that time of the year, when the annual Movie Auction takes place... and by "the annual", we mean the very first one we've ever done.

In a concept borrowed from The Big Picture Podcast (all nods and love to Amanda Dobbins, Chris Ryan, and Sean Fennessey), Mikey and d$ are joined by Friends of the Show Garrison "Pride of Kennesaw" Ryfun and making his 2nd straight appearance, Roth from Wyoming to fill out their roster of films for 2024.

Everyone has a proverbial $1000 to work with, as various movies are put on the auction block and bid for - with the intentions of getting the movies that will make the most money domestically, as well as will get both Oscar and Golden Globe love in the fall of '24 and early 2025.

The big ones are all hear -- Deadpool 3, Furiosa, Inside Out 2, and Despicable Me 4 included -- plus some surprises, like a Smile sequel, a Sonic sequel, an Apes sequel, and an odd film picked out by Roth himself.

A Rotten Tomatoes game determines the draft order, and the chatter hits on everything from TayTay in the NFL and who Agent Argylle might actually be and more nonsense as per usual.

The review of 2023 films are in full swing, but first there is the annual look back at the movies seen last year that were NOT FROM last year. Its the Not 2023 Top Ten, where we highlight films worthy of a second discussion because they just impacted us so much.

Together, the foursome discuss their top ten faves of the year from all over the place, as far back as the early 50s to all the way through the 60s and 70s and in the 00s -- The greatness of Chucky Heston before he told us "YOUR MOVE, IMPERATOR..." Episode 611: The 2023 Lumps of Coal

Like the Daytona 500, it's a tradition unlike any other. A look back at the films this year that just made our heads spin in circles about why they are just so not good.

Out of the dozens of films The Deucecast Movie Show loved, out of the hundreds of movies the Deucecast Movie Show liked... there are a handful of movies -- or in #TwitterlessDrEarl's case, tropes, patterns, directors and the like -- that just didn't land... or maybe landed with a crash and burn in a bad way.

First up, a quick spoiler-free review of the latest, and possibly final film in this current DCU series -- "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom". Some honest takes on what worked (a few things) and what didn't (a lot of things).

Then, the top (bottom) movies of the year for Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl... the movies that made all of them cringe, throw popcorn, get upset at how bad they are, or even disappointed at how good they were supposed to be.

The last episode of the year!!

  • Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania (Disney+)
  • Aquaman & the Lost Kingdom (in theaters)

Episode 610: The Christmas Gifts of 2023

It's a Marshmallow Deucecast indeed as the Cheetah Girls finally make their annual appearance on the show!

It's the last stop before Christmas Day, with the 9th Annual Christmas Gift episode -- and the fourth Gifts ep in a row with Garrison "The Pride of Villa Rica" Ryfun joining up!

In this episode, the final 2023 Birthday Movies kicks the show off, with Aquaman turning 5, LOTR3 turning 20, Tombstone turning 30, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang turning a lot older than you'd think.

After catching up with Mikey's and Garrison's 2023 movie numbers, it's another edition of Everything Everywhere All At Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, following the first ever round last summer.

Then the gifts -- Gal Gadot needs a break... WWE gets a multiverse... some films and filmmakers get better coverage... and the world gets more Whit Stillman... and much more.

Finally, Mikey hands out tangible gift bags, while d$ and G-Ryfun hand out their own gifts, with a stop in the pretentious corner (sort of) and returning to the well for a few films.

Stick around to the very end... it's a delight.

Episode 605: The Prestige of Nolan

With David Fincher releasing a new (and super good) film this week, "The Killer", the Deucecast thought it would be a great time to pay homage to one of our country's greatest living directors - Christophe Nolan.  (We aren't sure everyone had time to see Fincher's latest, so we swerved)

And what better way than to call up our friend of the show, the Podawan himself, The Pride of Smyrna, Georgia, young Garrison Ryfun!

First, a little round of WORD UP!, where the guys fill in the blanks on the most important topics of the day -- the failure of The Marvels, the success of Five Nights at Freddys and what to think about TayTay's concert film.

Also, does #XlessDrEarl really want to see "It's a Wonderful Knife?"

And then, the guys do a ranking of their top 10 (out of the 12) theatrical releases of Chris Nolan movies... from the most well known -- Inception, Interstellar, Dunkrik -- to the less known -- Following -- to the forgotten gems -- The Prestige, Insomnia -- and of course, Big Oppy.

Episode 604: The November 80s

The holiday season is here, and we are one week out from our annual DeuceGiving episode, which kicks off two months of annual eps - from Christmas gifts to Kaufman's yearly seasonal offerings to Top Tens of Not the Year to Lumps of Coal and much more.

But that's later.

Two years ago, we talked best November movies of the 2000s (episode 505). Last year, we took it back a decade and did the best of the 90s (episode 558), and this time around, the 1980s take center stage, as Mikey, d$, and special guest, "The Rocket Man" Uncle Brian, gives their fave films released in any year of the 80s, but only within the month of November.

First up, Uncle Brian reveals one of his hobbies -- the first time in 604 eps that Blinko has ever been discussed. Then, a miserable, total failure round of Box Office Mojo -- no seriously, the performance is awful and must be acknowledged as such.

Then, the Top Five 80s November films -- a little Trek... some Bugs... Charlie Sheen and a weird car... Chuck Norris rescues POWs... M'Lynn is wearing a brown football helmet... ending the Cold War... and a somewhat real discussion on the career and films of one Deucecast legend, Jim Varney, aka, "Ernest".

Episode 603: All Hail the Burgessing

It's an annual tradition around this time, not only to celebrate Halloween with a little spooky movie talk, but also to give the fans what they want - the results of the 9th annual MikeTober Event.  It's not as big as the Lilith Fair, but bigger than Toyotathon ever hoped to be -- its Mikey watching five scary movies and ranking them from least to best.

But first, Mikey, d$, and #XlessDrEarl welcome in Friend of the Show, Miss Independent himself, Jeremy Burgess, as Burgess catches everyone up on the latest with his film "Don't Die" as well as giving a few film recommendations that you may have not heard of.

A little entertainment tonight, October B'day movies rolls in, including "Venom", "Never Say Never Again", "Kill Bill Vol 1" and even "Lassie Come Home", all celebrating birthdays in October.

Finally, the Stephen King Countdown. All the guys give their top five fave King adaptations, some horror, some sci-fi, some just great films... and some not so great.  We hope you get your own list of films to see!

And then MikeTober pays off, as he gives his take on "The Descent" (d$'s pick)... "The Wailing" (Garrison)... "Cat People" (Burgess)... "The Wicker Man" (Dr. Earl)... "His House" (Roth from Wyoming)... and of course, Aussie Nate's huge addition, "Little Monsters".

Episode 602: DeuceFellas - The Scorsese Top 5

"You downloading me? You listenin' to me?!" That's right, it might sound like a DeNiro themed episode, but we actually turn our attention the legend behind the camera, one Martin Scorsese, as Dave, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl discuss and rank some of their fave Marty films.

First, a quick catch up, then a spoiler free review of the latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon", then the return of the Rotten Tomatoes game, this time with a little Scorsese Potpourri.

Then, the guys rank and discuss each of their fave Top 5 Scorsese directed films, with the full knowledge there a ton of them they haven't seen. Nonetheless, it still makes for a great conversation, as they discuss thoughts on "Goodfellas", on "Color of Money" (and Mary Elisabeth Mastrantonio, of course), on "Taxi Driver" and a ton more.

Then, once the credits role, Steve signs off, and Casey counts 'em down, a special aftershow, spoiler filled review of "Killers of the Flower Moon"... chatting about the cast, the cinematography, the music, some Easter Eggs, how Lily Gladstone matched up with DeNiro and Leo, and the film's Oscar -- and Deucie -- chances.

DCMS Episode 600: The Big Bracket

Finally, after all the hubbub and chatter and stops and starts, Mikey, d$ and #XLessDr Earl have made it to the culmination of topics of 28 previous episodes... The Big Bracket.

From Episode 291 to Episode 599, 36 movie roles were chosen and now will face off one on one... a majority vote rules, as the crew goes through the match ups one at at time.

But what fun is a Movie Role Bracket if there aren't more Friends of the Show joining up?  And Friends of the Show join up... producing the show is Roth from Wyoming and stepping in is Lil G "Pride of Albany" Ryfun... then along the way comes (in order of appearance...) Lil Andy... Aussie Nate... Hurricane Rhett... "Amish" Jenn Novotny... Jenny Kaufman... Matty Mink... Uncle Brian... Coach DiBello... and of course, The Icon, Scotty "Ryfulicious" Ryfun...

It's absolutely the longest episode we've ever done, as we agreed early on there would be no Big Bracket in 601 -- the group powers through the entire show. New theme songs, familiar favorites, jokes fly, Garrison drives, Mikey has a delay, Earl changes his mind, d$ keeps it all moving.

Enjoy the show.
