Episode 168: Close Encounters Intermission

It's a special version of The Deucecast Movie Picture Show, as we roll out an Intermission... a chance to spend a little time on one classic film.  This time, we take on 1977's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"!

In studio, d$, Mikey and Pinky are joined by Hurricane Rhett, who says this is one of his all time favorite films, and the gang takes on the film, it's history, behind the scenes drama, how Richard Dreyfus got the part, how director Steven Spielberg would change it if he could now and Hurricane Rhett gives a dissertation on the famous five note jingle.

Plus, you'll also hear "Dark Mashed Potato Confessions" from Mikey, and somehow, someway, Pinky steers the entire show into Lifetime movies vs Hallmark Movies, because he does that sometimes.

Enjoy this quick half hour of Deucecast awesomeness as we have ourselves a "Close Encounter!"

Episode 163: The Rocky V Intermission

In this episode, the Deucecast Movie Show welcomes in Shotglass Digital poobah and Rocky Apologist, as well as Rebel Force Radio co-host Jimmy Mac!!

The Deucecast Movie Show prides itself on giving special attention to certain films, wrapping an entire episode around it, classic films like "North by Northwest" and "Seven Samurai" and "Dr Strangelove" and "Rocky V" and...

(insert record scratch sound here)

Wait, what?

That's right... that movie that compared to the other films in the franchise, is like the drunk uncle who the rest of the respectable family members keep locked in a bedroom during the Christmas Party... "Rocky V", where Sly Stallone brings back Rocky Balboa to be a destitute street fighter when Paulie is given financial responsibilities and screws everything up... where Rocky's son Robert ages 5 or 6 years in a matter of a few weeks of movie time... where the real ending had Rocky taking drastic measures but never happened... where Tommy Morrison might have died from AIDS... where us talking about it gives it more attention than it's gotten in a long time...

Also joining the discussion in this episode with a chime in here and there are friends of the show Jeremy and Craiggy Mac!

Enjoy the show... its better than the movie!!!

Episode 155 -- Intermission: Taxi Driver

With the Oscar nominations just out, with our own show's awards ("The Deucies") looming, so much is happening, we are taking a step back and prepping for everything to come.  So this week, we take a quick break by giving you a shorter episode, an Intermission discussion on the Robert DeNiro classic Taxi Driver from 1976.

Mikey, Pinky & Movie Historian The Honorable Dr. Earl dive into Martin Scorcese's early masterpiece, with DeNiro playing legendary character Travis Bickle as the renegade cabbie.  d$ is out of the studio for this slice of movie history, and Mikey takes the hosting lead this time around.

Starring not only DeNiro, but also Jodie Foster (as a teen prostitute!), Albert Brooks (with a huge fro') and even Peter Boyle (waaaay before "Everybody Loves Raymond") makes an appearance as well.

Its the movie that John Hinkley cited as an influence for his assassination of John Lennon, full of violence and 70s film noir... should you see it?  Listen to our discussion and decide for yourself.

And next week, two very special guests join us in the studio for a great discussion of January films and the return of Ryan Phillippe!!

Episode 150 -- Intermission: White Christmas

If you are dreaming of a Deucecast Christmas, with visions of Elf Mikey and Reindeer Dave and Sugarplum Pinky (Sugarpinky?) dancing through your heads, this is totally the Intermission for you!

The guys take on the 50s classic White Christmas, as Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye survive the war, go on tour with their dancing routine, meet up with Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney, and follow them to the Christmas paradise of Vermont. Entertainers all, it's time to do a benefit to raise money, fall in love, sing some memorable tunes and dance some memorable dances.

Answers to the burning questions that have been weighing on your hearts... is this a sequel to "Holiday Inn"? Who is that guy in the Bugs Bunny cartoons? And who liked it more (and less) than they thought they would?   Plus, we give a rundown of the main cast, who they are and what became of them...

And in a twist, the discussion takes a dive into the state of "musicals" in Hollywood, and why we fear the medium might be dying a slow death... sad trombone sound here.

It's a movie that really only has Christmas scenes in select parts of the movies, but is considered a Christmas classic to be cherished forever.

(Next week, on The Deucecast Movie Show Episode 151... The Deucecast Christmas Party, starring Mikey and Dave, with Pinky reporting in from a remote location in the woods somewhere!   Our favorite Christmas films (including... Jaclyn Smith?!), the report on the terrible holiday films we were forced to watch and more fun and frivolity!)

Episode 149 -- Intermission: Jaws

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the podcast... ba-dum... ba-dum... ba-dum... ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum badumbadumbadumbadum.... you'll recognize the music and recognize the terror of the ocean as The Deucecast Movie Show takes on the classic film "Jaws" from 1975.

The guys discuss the making of the film indepth, including how Richard Dreyfuss begged for the part of Hooper... the consideration of Jeff Bridges and others for the part... the monetary success of the movie itself... what the author of the book it was based on had to say about sharks today... the connection to the 2010 movie "Piranha 3D"... Pinky waxing poetic by saying "What scares you the most is what you cannot see"... Mikey using the word "titular"... and so much more trivia, fun and frivolity.

Plus, a quick reference to Jaws 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge--which one does Dave consider to be in his Bottom 10 Movies of All Time.

The are joined in the studio by friend of the show Drew and Brother of the Predator Sean Hall, and their take on Jaws.  And Superman III, for some reason.

Join us next week for The Deucecast Movie Show Episode 150, a special Christmas intermission when we take on the classic "White Christmas"!

Episode 145 -- The Deucecast Intermission: The Godfather Part II

Mikey, P!nky and d$ jump back into The Godfather Saga by taking on what is arguably the better of the first two (and definitely better than the third... then again, d$ contends that Damon Wayan's Mo' Money is better than the third Godfather III)... and again, we are joined up by Classic Movie Historian and Terence Malick Apologist, the Honorable Doctor Earl.

...It's the Intermission Episode with the full discussion on the classic The Godfather Part II.  From 1974, the film centers on dueling story lines... first, the ascent of power of Michael Corleone, and his submerging into the darkness that is the mafia in the 1950s... next, we see the early days of the future "don", that being Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando in the first film).

An Academy Award winner for best picture, and starring Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, join the guys as they dissect the movie, talk about favorite scenes, the nuances and the movie as a whole... not from some snotty critics point of view, but from a FAN's point of view!

Also, join on us Episode 146, when d$ and local comic book shop owner and geek extraordinaire have a full discussion on the merging of Disney & Star Wars... sorta movies, sorta magic, all geek.  That's next week!

Episode 141 -- Intermission: Halloween

That's right, this time the guys in The Deucecast Movie Show take on Halloween... no, not the holiday... but the 1978 classic film, Halloween.  Starting from the bone-chilling score that is comprised of just a few notes (and a million nightmares), d$, Mikey & P!nky break down the classic from John Carpenter.

Discussions include the plot itself, the infamous mask and it's origins, Jamie Lee Curtis, the music, the extended scenes and more.

This begins our three-part Halloween (the holiday, not the movie) series of shows... first, this Intermission... then, our Main Show next Monday with a Halloween-movie version of "Reel or Unreel," along with our favorite Horror Films of All Time, and the results of Miketober--Mikey watching classic scary movies, which he hates.

And before Halloween, our usual round up of ReFlicktions, this time with P!nky attempting to watch about 188 scary films per day.  Our young padawan has goals.

THIS FRIDAY... HUUUUUUGE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE PODCAST... listen live on www.thedeucecast.com or find us on Stitcher, or download the show on Monday to hear what's in store for The Deucecast Movie Show!!

Intermission: The Last Picture Show – Episode 137

In 1971, Peter Bogdavich shot a film in black and white, casted relative unknowns like Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Randy Quaid and Timothy Bottoms, along with old Hollywood legends like Ben Johnson, and created a masterpiece film about a dying small town from the 50s buried in West Texas.  Winner of 2 Academy Awards and nominated for 8, the guys tackle The Last Picture Show in this latest Intermission episode.

P!nky, d$ and Mikey discuss the plot, the making of and the legacy of this classic... we hope you enjoy it, and we hope you watch the film itself!

Intermission: Sabrina

On the episode of The Deucecast: Intermission.... Mikey, Pinky and d$ channel the romance by taking on a 1954 classic (and thereby fueling Mikey's odd mancrush on William Holden) called "Sabrina".

Its a tale of a girlish crush, a playboy gent and an older brother... the girl loves the gent, who is attached to someone else, and that someone else is the key to a mega business deal... and all the sorts of hilarity and heartstrings-pulledness occurs along the way.

The guys discuss the likes and dislikes of the film, along with all sorts of little trivia (like, did you know Humphrey Bogart thought Audrey Hepburn was talentless, and that co-star William Holden was kinda stupid?)

Don't forget, next week on The Deucecast Movie Picture Show, all the usual frivolity, including discussing football films... and then on the next Deucecast Intermission, we go family friendly... with Al Pacino's "Scarface"

Intermission: North By Northwest

Take a suave executive played by a suave'er actor, give him a fine dame to romance played by a fine dame of an actress, toss in a bad guy played by a dude who sounds like a bad guy, then give him an evil henchmen who is played by an actor who always looked like he could be an evil henchmen... you got Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landeau.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1959's "North by Northwest" is sheer art... not a movie--a film.  And this is our film of choice to discuss and dissect on this week's Deucecast Intermission...

Join d$ as he discusses a movie that ranks in his Top 60 films all time, and Mikey and Pinky discuss seeing it for the very first time.
