Episode 678: Star Wars Adjacent Movies

As we celebrate yet another May the 4th (be with you), Mikey, d$ and #XlessDrEarl change up their Star Wars topics a bit - instead of fave scenes or ranking the movies, this time, its a look at all the movies that Star Wars inspired... some that turned out to be legendary... some that turned out to be legendarily bad...

Can't Force alone, so the crew invites in Fan Fave and longtime friend of the show Hurricane Rhett Barnett, and he gives his own take on the 2024 comedy horror movie "Heretic" as well as a brief chat about the rerelease of "Revenge of the Sith", which has Mikey using the word "Refractory" and Rhett using the phrase "Marital Bed".

Then they play what turns about to be a disastrous version of "Everything Everywhere All At Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", which may end up being retired at some point because no one can play the stupid thing (note: d$'s opinion).

Then, a top five of Star Wars Adjacent, with some classic Flash Gordon and a chat about Sam Jones and Jacko (OY!), plus star fighters and dark stars and stars with battles beyond them, plus a glave, a hole, Ridley Scott's inspiration, and even kitchen appliances in a classic short film.

Episode 626: The 2024 Deucie Awards (and the Top 10 of the Year)

Normally, when you hear "A tradition unlike any other", you think The Masters, as that's the slogan. However, it is a slogan that more closely describes THE DEUCIE AWARDS!!

For the 11th time, Dave and Mikey, now joined by #XLessDrEarl, preside over the "people's movie awards"... and the top 10 of the year as well!

And to assist, the Deucecast crew invites in many friends of the show, from Burgess to Kaufman to Aussie to the Ryfuns and even more -- with an assist from The Main Street Electrical Podcast co-host Jenn Novotny, it's quite an award-fest!

In addition, Dave, Mikey, and Dr Earl give their own fave films of the year -- you can likely guess the films that make all three lists, but there are a few out of left field as well.

Make sure to catch Ep 621 from a few weeks ago, where we do our "just outside the top ten" list...

Make sure to follow along with the winners!

DCMS Episode 600: The Big Bracket

Finally, after all the hubbub and chatter and stops and starts, Mikey, d$ and #XLessDr Earl have made it to the culmination of topics of 28 previous episodes... The Big Bracket.

From Episode 291 to Episode 599, 36 movie roles were chosen and now will face off one on one... a majority vote rules, as the crew goes through the match ups one at at time.

But what fun is a Movie Role Bracket if there aren't more Friends of the Show joining up?  And Friends of the Show join up... producing the show is Roth from Wyoming and stepping in is Lil G "Pride of Albany" Ryfun... then along the way comes (in order of appearance...) Lil Andy... Aussie Nate... Hurricane Rhett... "Amish" Jenn Novotny... Jenny Kaufman... Matty Mink... Uncle Brian... Coach DiBello... and of course, The Icon, Scotty "Ryfulicious" Ryfun...

It's absolutely the longest episode we've ever done, as we agreed early on there would be no Big Bracket in 601 -- the group powers through the entire show. New theme songs, familiar favorites, jokes fly, Garrison drives, Mikey has a delay, Earl changes his mind, d$ keeps it all moving.

Enjoy the show.

Episode 533: Aerial Dogfights

In just a week or so, the Deucecast Guys enter into the Danger Zone again, at a preview for Top Gun, so that leads the discussion to TOP FIVE DOGFIGHTS in movie history.  Snoop, Snoopy, The Bounty Hunger or Junkyard are not included.  A task too big for just d$, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl, so who do they turn to?  Of course, Hurricane Rhett, because this show has been on the rails way, way too long.

First, memories of the original Top Gun... where did everyone see it?  How young, and how many zippers were on those parachute pants?

Then, the top five movies with aerial battles, mostly featuring planes, but some with helicopters, even some fists, and a stealth fighter named Firefox.

Mikey has the Zoa on tap... Memphis Belle's true mission... the Time Vortex... Ken Olin gets a namedrop... USA Night Flight... the badness of Pearl Harbor... the goodness of Dunkirk... Mikey's weird voices... ID4 mistakes... AirWolf vs Blue Thunder, featuring Riptide... All the Iron Eagles...

Episode 230: The Unnecessary Sequels

You could say every episode after Ep 1 of this show is an unnecessary sequel... but yet, its 229 episodes later.  Being Pinkless again, Dave and Mikey welcome back Hurricane Rhett to the studio, as well as Producer Shawn, and on the line... it's Scott Ryfun!

Before the lists begin, it's time to play another "NAME THAT..." game, this time with acting legend Jean-Claude Van Damme.  Can you tell your "Maximum Risk" from "Cyborg" from "Hard Target" from "Lionheart"?  Find out as you hear the descriptions and make the guess on the titles.

Finally, because "Now You See Me 2" isn't called "Now You Don't", it qualifies as an "Unnecessary Sequel".  Listen in as Dave, Mikey, Ryfun & Hurricane Rhett give their best examples of great movies that had movies after it that just didn't need to be made...

Movies such as a Halloween sequel... a Crocodile Dundee sequel... a Highlander sequel... A Grumpy Old Men sequel... a Mannequin sequel... and some classic films that have... prequels. Yup. It happens here.

And topics like... tainting the legacy of "Close Encounter of the Third Kind"... Mike Myers and Willy Wonka... Paul Hogan's tax woes... the future of your franchise when Shannon Tweed gets involved... the lose your virginity 80s genre... the "Put Shia LaBeouf in Everything" era... Edward James Olmos with a Schwarzenegger ISIS flair... Jack Nicholson sequels... the sadness of the prequels... Terry Crews making movies better... the musical stylings of Mac Davis... the fallacy of Louis Gossett, Jr... Bo Svenson vs Joe Don Baker...

First, a great round of The Ryan Phillippe Game, in which one of the guys flames out completely on Denzel Washington movies... Embarrassingly so.  And can you name the movies from Tom Hanks?  Reese Witherspoon?  Or even Mark Wahlberg?

Among other discussions... The importance of seeing earlier Marvel movies to watch the newer Marvel movies... the advent of DAVE'Splosion... d$'s love of Tina Fey... 28 Days vs 28 Days Later...  The argument for Kristin Stewart... Episode 228: Forget Everything You Think You Know... A Marvel-ous Discussion

Forget Everything You Think You Know!!!!  A few weeks back, after the debacle that was Batman Vee Superman Dawn of Justice, the movie guys had a long discussion on the good (not much) and bad (much) on DC movies.
With Pinky out on location filming his first movie, Dave and Mikey welcome in friend of the show, Terrence Malick Apologist and Film Historian Dr Earl, and welcome back to the studio the Rantmaster Extraordinaire Hurricane Rhett to discuss Marvel movies.

After Birthday Movies (Cannonball Run is how old?!), the group dives in discussion topics like...

  • The total rundown of all main Marvel films since 1986's Howard the Duck
  • Fox Studios problem with X-Men
  • Which X-Men can carry a movie, and who would fail
  • The Fassbender to McKellen problem
  • Jennifer Lawrence mailing it in
  • Sony's Spiderman dilemma
  • What has been with Spidey and what could have been
  • Sony and Disney Marvel working together
  • Possible recasting of RDJ and Chris Evans
  • The test that is Dr. Strange
  • Marvel's approaches to the movies
  • #SoWhiteAvengers
  • The future movies coming up
  • The Marvel TV (Daredevil, Jessica Jones) melding into the cinematic universe
  • Brie Larson as Captain Marvel
Also, with some questions of Al Gore's Interwebs, the topic turns to what Marvel should have done differently... who should have been the original Sue Storm in 2005... the future of Inhumans and Mutants... and what the heck a CTI is...

Enjoy this lively discussion of where Marvel movies have been, where they are now and where they are going!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Special

Because we love Star Wars: The Force Awakens so much, we decided to do a quick review show of the movie itself.

Spoilers? Not at first!

We give a big overview of the movie itself, its possibly legacy and how great it is, then give a 10 second countdown to the beginning of spoilers.

Be warned:  If you are still listening after those 10 seconds, and you haven't seen the movie... first, what is wrong with you?  But second, we will ruin it for you -- but you will have plenty of warning.

Also joining the show is old school The Deucecast contributor and now co-host of Card Trader Illuminerdy Podcast, Hurricane Rhett Barnett.  Enjoy the bonus episode and Merry Christmas!!!

Episode 168: Close Encounters Intermission

It's a special version of The Deucecast Movie Picture Show, as we roll out an Intermission... a chance to spend a little time on one classic film.  This time, we take on 1977's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"!

In studio, d$, Mikey and Pinky are joined by Hurricane Rhett, who says this is one of his all time favorite films, and the gang takes on the film, it's history, behind the scenes drama, how Richard Dreyfus got the part, how director Steven Spielberg would change it if he could now and Hurricane Rhett gives a dissertation on the famous five note jingle.

Plus, you'll also hear "Dark Mashed Potato Confessions" from Mikey, and somehow, someway, Pinky steers the entire show into Lifetime movies vs Hallmark Movies, because he does that sometimes.

Enjoy this quick half hour of Deucecast awesomeness as we have ourselves a "Close Encounter!"

Episode 133 -- Thank you Robin Williams

On August 11th, 2014, we movie lovers had a tremendous loss occur with the passing of one of the most prolific actors of our generation, that being Robin Williams.

So the guys--d$, Mikey and P!nky--along with special in-studio guests Hurricane Rhett and Matty the Former Co-Host, with a special appearance by Deucecast Sweetheart Steph, pay tribute to Robin Williams by doing a full retrospective.

The guys don't dive into Robin's private life, his struggles or his demons, leaving that for other shows... instead, they track his complete career from beginning to the most recent films, sometimes breezing past a few, other times, like "Good Will Hunting", "Good Morning Vietnam", "Dead Poets Society", "Aladdin" and more, taking their time and having a great discussion on those films.

Join us as we have a great time celebrating the films of Robin Williams--and yes, acknowledging the fact there were some clunkers too--on this episode of The Deucecast Movie Picture Show
