Deucecast Classic: Sci Fi with TechnoRetro Dads

It's a busy spring break week for everyone as Mikey is busy eating and #TwitterlessDrEarl is in Long Island testifying at a lint removal procedure gone wrong trial and Dave is out of the state, so rather than trying to get a rushed show together, they guys are taking the week off.

This week, the show pays homage to our good friends over at TechnoRetro Dads, who's own show is ending. This Deucecast Classic is from May 2018, episode 327.  Enjoy the old school vibe, and here are the original show notes from that episode:

It's a couple of guys who keep their heads in the clouds and gaze at the stars, so it's only fitting that Dave and Mikey discuss Fantasy and Science Fiction films. But since #Twitterless Dr Earl can't be found (he's doing a lint removal procedure from the naval of poor kids in Long Island), who better to invite onto the show than the TechnoRetro Dads  themselves, Shazbazzar and Jedi Shuuuuuuuuaaaaahhhhhh....

And the gang jumps right in, counting off their lists of what they consider to be their favorite fantasy/sci-fi films of this century... that's really anything released on January 1st, 2000, until... well, you know, today. Or the day of the recording, anyway.

The TRD's also give their take on "Ready Player One" before diving into the Top Ten, then the guys discuss at length -- and at depth -- the legacy and their adoration of films like "Children of Men" and the newest "Star Trek" and newer "Star Wars" films and Shaz defends "John Carter" while Dave defends "Lady in the Water".

Its a great two hours of sci fi fantasy fun and movie love!

Episode 400: The DCMS Virtual Film Festival Pt 1

The Deucecast Movie Show is proud to do what only a few people thought -- or cared -- they could do... hit Episode 400.  After 399 shows of film mediocrity (with some flashes of brilliance: see "Hoyle, KB"), the 400th show begins.

To celebrate 400, Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl, are hosting the very first Deucecast Movie Show Podcast Virtual Film Festival, each showcasing five films that are near and dear to them over the course of a virtual weekend, on a virtual stage, in front of a virtual audience.

And because the show wouldn't be what it was without the fans who listen, and the rotating cast of characters that come on the show, ten of the regulars have been invited to give three of their favorite films to showcase.

Jennifer Kaufman is on first, with what she considers to be a perfect film, plus a cute flick between her and Dude Kaufman, and a sentimental Deucecast favorite too.

Longtime co-host and now Gulag occupant Pinky comes back to give his fave Pixar film, his fave horror film, and a recent movie he saw as a young tyke. Like, when he was 8.

Indie fan and Mikey contrarian Jeremy Burgess steps in for a fabulous sports documentary, a classic thriller, and then zags with an unexpected guilty pleasure.

Finally, on Part 1, the TechnoRetro Dads themselves join the show -- Shaz & Shua showcase some classic 80s sci-fi, a Steve Martin classic, and, of course, Krull.  As well as Dave's story about Cheap Trick.

Of course, the show hosts have their own picks too, with a crazy doc and a serious doc.  Pretentiousness reigns from 1928, Incredible Michael Mann, and another Kerri Green name drop.

Join the show next week for Part 2 of the Virtual Film Fest, with appearances by Retro Joe, Clay Shaver, Jenn Novotny and both Old and Young Ryfun!

Episode 336: The Arnold Sweet 16 (Ft Shaz!)

The biggest movie role tournament in the history of podcasts (disclaimer, that meaning podcasts that are recorded in Meadowbrook, AL) rolls on, as Mikey, Dave and #Twitterless Dr Earl tackle another handful of great movie roles from a legendary Hollywood actor.
This time, Arnold Schwarzaneggar gets his day in the sun, matching up iconic characters like The Terminator, Quaid from Total Recall, John Matrix from Commando, Det Kimble from Kindergarten Cop and much more.

But to truly make this a well informed episode, the guys had to call in an 80s movie expert.

On the Binder & Binder Law Firm hotline, TechnoRetro Dad's own Shazbazzer joins the group to discuss their favorites, which is better, which is worse, a love of Conan the Barbarian, what Mad Magazine called Conan, a true love of True Lies, the underrated Running Man and much, much more.

One character is crowned the winner and moves onto the Big Bracket!

Episode 327: Sci Fi Fantasy Films of This Century

Episode 278: The Film Four (Movie Year Tourney Part VIII)

It's getting down to the bare bones of the Greatest Movie Year Ever Tournament, as only FOUR years remain.  And it's time to find the finalists.

Helping Dave, Mikey, and Pinky are guests on the Binder & Binder hotline, first with our favorite Michigander podcaster Remodeling Clay Shaver, and then Wit Stillman fan, Brie Lover (Alison, Cheese and Larson), Terence Malick Apologist, Film Historian AND the worlds greatest octonologist, Dr Earl.

And to add even more to the show, the guys bring on the co-host of the TechnoRetro Dads podcast, the man known to the world as Shazbazzar, aka, Shaz.

First up, a new game to discuss Adam Sandler and Netflix, Jeff Goldblum's Jurassicness, and Will Smth as... The Genie?  It's a game called "Word Up!" which also introduces Remodeling Clay's new theme song!

Then, a visit to Episode 274, with the 1989 defeat over 1982, and Shaz's big issue with it. Shaz gives a genre by genre rundown of 89 vs 82 (even though, let's be honest, it doesn't matter)...  including the movie that will fit the bill in case you are looking for some Casual Racism.

The first battle becomes so difficult, the show called in ANOTHER special guest to help decide as Shaz takes on d$ for the win... with Shaz firing an "Ad Hominem Attack"

1986

Episode 239: TV into Movies (ft Shazbazzar!)

If you've ever watched a classic television show from the 70s or 80s and thought "Man, this would be a great movie!" then this is The Deucecast Movie Show episode for you!

Mikey, Dave and Pinky first welcome in Terrance Malick Apologist and Film Historian Dr Earl, and welcome back to the Perry King Studios none other than TechnoRetro Dads co-host Shazbazzar!

First up, the birthday movies, including August 1986, which was a gold mine of classic films all released in a few weeks of each other.

Next... playing a game called Chronology, with categories like "Whats My Nam, Yo!" and "Its Gonna Be Huuuughes", naming the correct order of films release dates.

And finally... a collection of television shows from the 70s and 80s that the hosts and guests would love to see turned into a film... imagine a big screen version of Perfect Strangers... or The Wonder Years... or Six Million Dollar Man... or even a classic 80s game show turned into a thriller.  And Dave does his best to make sure a certain beloved actress gets some work!  Plus, who would be better as KITT... Samuel Jackson or Morgan Freeman?

Can Christian Slater be a Hogan Hero?  Can Jeffrey Dean Morgan be a Haitian priest?  And who is the Scarecrow and who is Mrs King?

And Dave talks about the dream cast of a classic anime film... and discussions of fitting a long series into a 2 hour film, and Stephen King's upcoming works.  And bonus, a sampling of some classic theme songs!

Episode 167: Some Childhood Favorites

The boys are back and better than ever... of course, Mikey had to bail before the episode was to begin--some nonsense about his very pregnant wife having contractions and such.  We will discuss his commitment to the show soon.

Filling in the Mikey-shaped hole, TechnoRetro Dads co-host Shazbazzar steps in as we discuss our favorite movies from when we were children.  With one growing up in the 70s/80s, another growing up in the late 80s and yet another growing up in the 90s, a wide range of films are discussed, including sharing love for The Goonies... The Secret of NIMH... The Last Unicorn... Lord of the Rings... WarGames... and does Howard the Duck hold up?  All of these and even more films you may have forgotten about.

You'll also get great discussions on the loss of Saturday morning cartoons... why ...Say Anything might not be as good as we pretend it is... a quick mention of other great Cusack films from the 80s...  who sings "Young Hearts Beat Fast" in Karate Kid... d$'s attempt to write the Mannequin novelization... Saved by the Bell... a thrilling round of Rotten Tomatoes...

And, Pinky reveals how much he loves/likes/apathetic/dislikes/hates Pee Wee's Big Adventure in Pretty in Pink!

Don't forget to check out fan and friend Craig Harmann's book, and you can download it for free by clicking here -- www.books.noisetrade.com/craigharmann/words-of-worship

Next week... an awesome Intermission of the classic film Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Episode 165: April-May Preview

There are a handful of big films, and a few smaller ones, that are hitting theaters in the next 9 weeks, and the guys at the Deucecast Movie Show are here to tell you all about them.  Mikey is out this week, but helping to fill the gap is TechnoRetro Dad's co-host Shazbazzar!

Some of the previews that d$, Pinky and Shaz cover include Aloha, the new Owen Wilson/Emma Stone flick... Tom Hardy in Mad Max Fury Road... the potential for a wasted cast in Age of Adeline (with Harrison Ford!)... The Rock beating up an earthquake in San Andreas... and how Jennifer Aniston is the best FRIENDS actor out there.

Naturally, the guys also spend several minutes on Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron!

Plus, topics covered in random rabbitrails include why Pinky hates trailers... serious Jonah Hill vs serious James Franco... those kids in the Coke commercial at Six Flags and the movies during trailers... d$'s Titanic video tape story... why watching Unfriended might be like picked a scab... and a guilty pleasure love for Kevin James...

And, as you would expect the show to do, a quick shoutout to The Great Space Coaster... don't miss the ending tune!

All this and more in this week's episode of The Deucecast Movie Show!

Episode 147 -- Happy DeuceGiving!

Oh, but Peter Jackson did... he definitely did.
It's an annual tradition, when we at The Deucecast Movie Picture Show, give thanks for the things in the movies that we love, appreciation for theaters we enjoy, actors we cheer for and trends we follow... and by "annual tradition", we mean we did it a few years ago and wanted to do it again...

...so an annual tradition is born... again... we call it DeuceGiving!!

We are honored, first, as Shaz and Jedi Shua from The TechnoRetro Dads podcast calls in and enjoys an easy round of Simple Star Wars Trivia, a game that we hadn't played in quite a while, but Mikey was excited to get another crack at, while P!nky did it for the first time.  So, if nothing else, Shaz & Shua make this episode worth it!

Then, we tell the world what we are truly thankful for in the movie universe, everything from Marvel movies to Amy Adams (who d$ is in love with) to the finality of Hobbit movies... its a celebration of appreciation for theatrical awesomeness.

A new way to assign movies just for this Christmas time, as we draw out of a hat the titles of the 6 worst Christmas movies we could find on Netflix... find out who is forced to see Santa Claus vs The Martians and who will be forced to watch some randomness subtitled Danger in the Manger.   And that might be the cream of the crop...

Finally, a rousing discussion of Hollywood awards, and whether we feel that "message movies" with perhaps decent performances is more highly regarded than a "original film" with great performances... and be surprised by the trends over the last few years, especially in Best Actress.

Join us next week as well when we do our monthly ReFlicktions, covering everything from "Birdman" to "Interstellar" to "Big Hero 6" to the problem with Ice Cube in "Ride Along"--and find out what Pinky truly thought about his latest Pretty in Pink assignment...
