Episode 621: The Almost Top 10 Top Five

The Academy Awards are finally completed, which means the Awards Season has but one stop... the Deucie Awards.  And to give out the awards, you need the nominations... so tonight, two special guests and Friends of the Show step up to reveal all that you have been wishing for (and you'll find below)

First, though, Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl discuss a little Oscar recap -- what was snubbed, the surprises, the chalk of it all, the good parts and the bad.

Then, they take a look at their fave films of the year, and while all of their Top 10s are coming up in a few weeks, along with the actual Deucie Awards, they loo
k just outside the Top 10, at numbers 11 through 15 on their lists. What just missed out on Mikey's Top 10, sitting in that next 5? What made d$'s 11 to 15, that may have made in the other guys top 10s?  And what movies are crossovers, appearing on everyone's lists?

And then finally... the nominations are out...

Episode 617: Oscars 10 to 5

While Mikey and d$ looked ahead to the movies to come for 2024 in last week's auction ep (thanks to Roth from Wyoming and Lil G, aka The Spawn of Ryfun, aka the Pride of Columbus, Garrizzle Ryfizzle for joining us), this week... we take a look at the past.

It's Hollywood Lore that the Best Picture nominee list went from 5 to anywhere from 7 to 10 after "The Dark Knight" was denied the honor in 2008's list (hence, 2009's list of 10 films!), but we wondered what would happen if they kept it at 5 films only...

Meaning, in some years, the list needed to be culled by a couple of films... in others, as many as 5 had to be cut.  It's a great discussion on movies loved and not-so-loved, movies worthy and therefore argued over, and movies passed over quickly, lucky to have been mentioned at all.

List of Best Picture nominees each year from 2009 to current - first nominee listed was the Best Picture winner from the year, aside from 2024's list.  Beginning in 2013, movies with an * denotes Deucie Winner for Best Picture in that year.

Episode 523: The REAL Best Picture Nominees 2001

The award season is on the fast track to the big one, the Academy Awards, and it was time to revisit some of the previous Oscar seasons... specifically, the Best Picture nominees from years gone by.

And to accomplish this feat of movie strength, Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl bring in Mr Independent himself, Jeremy Burgess!

First, Burgey's take on movies you should see, both in a theater and streaming... then 2002 Oscar talk.

Essentially... there were only five nominees for Best Picture. Within a decade, they would allow up to ten films to be nominated.  So it's our job to come up with our own lists of the other five that should have also been nominated... note: we CANNOT remove any of the existing films, we can only add to the list.

And at the end of the show, the crew all submit one film each that should have been nominated, then a quick discussion on the final film, to come up with a Deuce Best Picture nominee list.

The existing nominees are Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, and Moulin Rouge!, with A Beautiful Mind winning... so the crew asks, "Did they get it right?"

Finally, Jeremy gives his take on the assigned Burgentine's Day films...

And all through the episode, the nominations for the 9th annual Deucie Awards are announced!

Movies discussed and where to find them:

  • Ali (Netflix; Hulu)
  • Amelie (not available)

The award season is on the fast track to the big one, the Academy Awards, and it was time to revisit some of the previous Oscar seasons... specifically, the Best Picture nominees from years gone by.

And to accomplish this feat of movie strength, Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl bring in the Spawn of Big Scott, the pride of Valdosta Georgia, the Young Movie Wunderkind Lil G Garrison Ryfun...

And at the end of the show, the crew all submit one film each that should have been nominated, then a quick discussion on the final film, to come up with a Deuce Best Picture nominee list.

Episode 367: And the Oscar Goes to Spring Movies

The Academy Awards just happened... but the recording of this episode was before the Oscars were given out... so what do Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDr Earl do?  Go ahead and record predictions for an episode that will air AFTER the actual results.

Because The Deucecast Movie Show is like that. Cutting edge and all.

And even better, the predictions made on the show weren't even the final predictions!  So why listen? Because we are awesome and you should.

And then, a full preview on the big releases upcoming for the months of March, April and May... Chloe Grace Moretz gets stalked... #TwitterlessDrEarl Marvels at Brie... Jordan Peele gets weird. Er. Weirder... Dumbo takes flight... revisiting Pet Sematary... the Endgame of Avengers... Keanu Reeves shoots lots of people... more dogs traveling the country... and much, much more!

Episode 364: The Best Best Picture Winners

Oscar nominations are out!  Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl spend an hour full of Oscar talk... and the fun thing is that when the recording of this episode happens, nominations aren't out yet.

So the guys get to make bold predictions on Oscar noms that have already happened now.  Who swings and misses wildly?  Who calls an Animated nom?  And who was the genius who called the Bradley Cooper snub and only 7 nominations for Star is Born??

Dr Earl also pontificates on a recent viewing of M. Night's sophomore effort "Unbreakable" (of which the recent "Glass" is a sequel to), a re-watch after about 12 or 15 years.

Then the Denzel game makes a stirring comeback, with shout outs to Mila Kunis, James Franco, and Mikey's Boo K-Cost, and who could forget Chuckles the Ape...

The top five this go-round takes a look at all the Academy Award Best Picture winners, including a look at the Godfather, the life-ness of Talia Shire, and what is the Good Dinosaur of Mobster movies... a rundown of the other movies that didn't win in the same year of the movies selected... some hot Sidney Poitier talk... the importance of Titanic in Dave's life...

Episode 314: The Oscar Nominees Are...

It's what The Deucecast Movie Show considers it's "Super Bowl", the Academy Awards.  Which we all know is really a prelude to the 5th Annual Deucies, coming up later this year.

But first, Mikey and Dave welcome in Friend of the Show, Wit Stillman Fan, Lover of Brie (Allison, Larsen & the cheese), Terrence Malick Apologist, Film Historian, and Nobel Prize of Medicine Nominee for his work in belly button aesthetics, The Estimable Twitterless Dr. Earl.

After a quick (?) game of Rotten Tomatoes Potpourri, Oscar style, Dave, Mikey and Earl go category by category, making early predictions, plus a discussion on the Oscar favorites and why Hollywood may go for "warm and fuzzy" rather than "gritty and harsh" this year.
